Do I need to know how to swim to go Canyoning? The truth from Alp Adventure

Every week, we get the exact same question: "I want to try canyoning, but I’m not a great swimmer. Can I still join?"

In the outdoor tourism world, people often downplay the risks just to sell an extra ticket, giving a generic "Yeah, sure, don't worry about it!"

At Alp Adventure, we prefer to be honest. If you are asking yourself "Do I need to know how to swim to go canyoning?" before heading out on your first canyon, the answer requires some important considerations. The correct answer isn't a simple yes or no; it depends entirely on one core factor: your relationship with water. Let’s clear things up.

You don't need to be an Olympic swimmer, BUT..

To enjoy real canyoning, you don't need to do the freestyle or breaststroke like an Olympic athlete. You won't spend hours swimming laps in open water.

However, there is a massive difference between "not being an expert swimmer" and "being terrified of water." During the trip, you will find yourself in deep pools where you cannot touch the bottom. Even though you will be wearing specific gear, you must be able to handle these situations without panicking.

The real obstacle: Water Confidence and Panic

More than swimming skills, what we look for in our participants is water confidence (aquaticity). What does that mean? It means being comfortable with water as an element. Ask yourself these questions:

  1. If cold water splashes hard on your face, do you stay calm?

  2. If you end up underwater for a few seconds after a slide, do you resurface smiling, or do you panic?

  3. Can you move your arms and legs to float vertically while listening to the guide’s instructions?

If deep water terrifies you, or if you absolutely cannot stay afloat for even a few seconds, canyoning can quickly turn from fun into a nightmare. And your safety—along with the safety of the whole group—always comes first for us.

The crucial role of the Wetsuit and flotation support

When you head down the river with Alp Adventure, you aren't just wearing a swimsuit. You are protected and supported by specialized technical gear designed to help you manage the water effortlessly:

  • The neoprene wetsuit: Several millimeters thick, the wetsuit traps micro-bubbles of air that provide an impressive, natural buoyancy. This means the neoprene constantly supports you, keeping you afloat and drastically reducing fatigue in aquatic sections.

  • The life jacket (upon request): Normally, a life jacket isn't necessary for canyoning because the wetsuit already provides all the buoyancy you need. However, if you aren't a confident swimmer or if the thought of deep water makes you nervous, we’ll be happy to provide one. Just an extra bit of support to ensure total peace of mind.

Thanks to the wetsuit, your body gets an upward boost that makes everything much easier: your only job will be to take a few strokes to move from point A to point B, or to guide yourself out of a pool after a jump or a slide.

The verdict: do I need to know how to swim to go canyoning or not?

To help you decide with total confidence, find the profile that matches you best:

  • "I can't swim and deep water terrifies me" Our advice: Real canyoning is not for you; you would risk going into panic mode. But you don't have to miss out on the river! Choose Aqua Trekking instead: you hike through the water, explore stunning spots, touch the bottom most of the time, and the approach is much gentler.

  • "I'm afraid of putting my head underwater" Our advice: This is a fundamental requirement. In canyoning, your head will go underwater: it happens when you jump, when you slide, or even from the force of the spray while rappelling down a waterfall. If this idea completely blocks you, we advise against this activity. If you are determined to try and know you can control the panic, it can absolutely be done: just remember to keep your mouth firmly shut during impact and manage the situation calmly.

  • "I can float, but I’m not an agile swimmer" Our advice: You can absolutely do it! The neoprene wetsuit will keep you afloat at all times, and our guides will be right by your side. A beginner route (Easy Level) is perfect for you: short deep-water pools, fun passages, and zero stress.

  • "I swim without any issues and I love the water" Our advice: You are in the right place. The sky's the limit: you can choose any canyon, from intermediate routes all the way to the most vertical and aquatic ones (Pro Level), where the river runs strong and adrenaline is guaranteed.

If you still have doubts about your level, don't leave it to chance. Contact us directly: we will look at your situation together to find the perfect, tailor-made route for you. No surprises.

Now you know the facts. Ready to challenge yourself?

You know how it works, you know what gear is involved, and you understand its importance. Now all that’s left is to choose your adventure, knowing you are in safe hands.
